The handwriting was the same.

‘So, Elizabeth wrote in both books?’ Eve squeaked.

‘I thought she recognised the Book of Shadows,’ I muttered. ‘She said she had started her own journal.’

‘It appears so, darling,’ Annie said. ‘Obviously, the Book of Shadows has been added to over hundreds of years, but I think Elizabeth was the start of the Sutton witches.’

‘After your visit, Millie, Elizabeth worked hard on her craft, and became more powerful than her mother, so this is entirely possible,’ Dad mused.

‘Wow, this is epic!’ Leo said, despite a mouthful of food.

‘I’m so glad I met her,’ Millie said as she smiled sadly.

‘Me too,’ Eve murmured as she stroked Millie’s arm.

‘Now, to tell you about my grandfather,’ Millie said softly as Annie clasped her hand. Everyone’s attention shifted to our favourite witch. ‘I’ve spoken to Mum about him. She knows he’s dead, and a tremendous weight has been lifted from her shoulders. She told me everything.’ Millie took a drink. ‘My grandma became very ill. She, like my mum, had magic, which Grandpa hated. When she became so ill that she eventually died, he blamed the magic even though, of course, magic wasn’t the cause of her illness, but apparently, he lost his mind and became obsessed with witchcraft. He sent Mum to an institution where they used all means of horrific things, including electroconvulsive therapy, to ‘drive’ the magic out.’ Millie took a breath.

‘When she came home, she had a nurse and was perpetually drugged. Then, after years of abuse and home-schooling, he allowed her to go to college as a day student. That’s where she met Dad, and eventually, they ran away together. It’s all deplorable.’ Millie wiped her eyes.

‘I would have loved to get my hands on this man,’ Miguel growled softly.

‘It’s okay, Miguel. Mum and my stepdad are taking a year’s vacation, travelling, and Mum is so excited. I’ve never seen her as confident or happy as she is now. She’s selling Grandpa’s house and giving the money to a charity close to her heart. Plus, Mum’s buying holiday homes all over the world, so at least we will get free holidays,’ Millie laughed.

‘Excellent,’ I muttered.

‘And she’s buying me a house.’

Eve’s face dropped at Millie’s words. ‘Y-you’re moving out?’

‘Not yet, but I’ll need to one day. Then, we can go house hunting together, and you can help me decorate and choose furniture, can’t you?’ Eve gave Millie a wobbly smile and nodded. ‘Anyway, I’m off to get ready. I love you all, honestly. I don’t know what I’d do without you,’ Millie stood, kissing Eve and Annie.

‘Where are you going, Millie?’ Eloise asked.

‘On a last-minute date with Max. We’re going to the cinema.’

I met Miguel’s gaze, and anger dug its razor-sharp claws into me, but Eve put a hand on my leg, and the emotion fizzled out. Miguel, however, thrust his fingers through his hair, and his body went rigid. I knew Miguel disliked the Adonis-wannabe-jerkwad as much, if not more, than I did. Leo took Miguel’s hand and said something in his ear, making Miguel frown.
